There is one by my area that is listed for $16k. Its an 850 (12-banger) as opposed to the 840. It is Alpine white and automagic, and only 83k on the clock. I am still considering it for myself, I havent concluded anything yet. The only problem is that if I buy it, I'll be living in it, or at least thats my wifes statement for the moment. But, given the sufficient amount of softening up, it may still be workable AND I can stay in the house. :rolleyes:

Ebay has them usually for around 20k and I've seen a few sell on Craigslist for 19-25k

The best one I saw was an M Spec 850CSi sell for 17k because the guy simply wanted to "get rid of it"

i considered buying an 8 for the past two years. and you can actually get an 840 with higher mileage but in decent shape for as low as 10 - anything under that you really dont want to touch - but i have seen some very clean ones go for 12 to 14. the higher end are obviously the newer ones, or those that were babied and are in great shape, and then the later csi's are a whole other story. but these cars are getting on in their years - and the MAJOR problem with them is PARTS:

I mean its to the point now that wrecked 8's are worth almost as much as a running one for the parts alone!

besides, if you were going to buy a decent one and maintain it, you could easily afford to buy a 6er. just makes more sense.

Yes, they are heavy, and come a bit under powered, but come on. Ever seen one. Nough said. With some mods here and there they are awesome cars. May not be the fastest of the line, but pull hard and cruise at 150 mph with plenty to go. I bought mine for 10,000 put 5 to 8 in it (won't check) and have the best car for under 20 grand you can have. Another great part, beside everybody drooling over it, is the resale will never go down. They aren't making any more and it is still considered by most, the best looking BMW made. Cost of ownership can suck if you by one that has problem. Since I've gotten mine straightened out, oil changes and what not don't really cost much. I can help with pricing. I have a great network for 8's. Rebuilt parts and what not.
Get one, you won't regret it!

I think the 850 is an absolute classic, one of the better lookers bmw made. I have to agree with Tim, the 2001 e38, Dark Blue exterior, and oyster interior sporting blue piping, MAN, that car rocks!

You have to be careful buying a lower priced 8. There are plenty of them out there that haven't been properly maintained. You can definitely pick one up for under $20K. But you better check that you are not getting something that will need an additional $10K when you purchase it.
