Blacking out chrome

I thought I had seen a thread here the other day where someone mentioned blacking out their chrome. If so, I can't find it now so I apologize for the duplicate post.

I want to black out the chrome on the entire car. There's really not that much. I probably will not do the grill because I would think that would be tedious, probably easier to buy a new grill 'cos they're not that expensive, right?

But for everywhere else, is it a spray? How do I make sure I don't get it all over the car? Do I take the chrome off first? And where do I get the paint?

I guess the most important question is, should I even do this at all or leave it to a professional?

I guess a lot would depend on if it is metal or plastic. Mine is metal and I thought I would try and powder coat it but I haven't tried to powder coat anything yet. Just another tool in wait in the garage.

Yeah, your bumpers are completely black and that's what I'm talking about. However, you still have chrome trim around things like your lights and your grill, and I also want all that to be black. I don't have chrome around my lights but I do have chrome on the black plastic side moldings. If I had as much chrome as your car, I probably wouldn't do it because it's such a big part of the car and frankly it looks great. But since I have so little, I thought I would do it this way.

You can either:

- Tape it using blackout trim tape from PepBoys, etc., but it's not long-lasting as the heat will eventually make it start to warp

- Paint it. It will require some prep work as you would want the paint to adhere to the chrome and not peel off. Also have to be careful not to get paint on the body of the vehicle, proper masking is key

- The last option, the most expensive, is to replace the chrome trim molding, etc., with Shadowline trim from the dealership..This involves also purchasing the little clips that secure the trim as you'll inevitably break one or two..$$

Sebastian, those articles are perfect, exactly what I was looking for! I'm all pumped to do this tomorrow! It will look great with my BRAND NEW TIRES! (pictures to be posted soon)

One more question for anyone: After I paint the trim, how soon before you think I should wash the car, assuming I have the opportunity to wash it at all? I think maybe I should wash it first, since the chrome has to be washed anyway before starting.

I did the tape and it has warped a little near the rear window around the curve. Someday I'll spring for the actual trim but for now, tape will do. It doesn't look that bad.
