Buying a 320i

I am thinking of buying an 80-83 320i. My goal is a relatively inexpesive, cool, relatively fun car that both my kids and I can drive. I would also like one that is modifiable (my plan would be to get 150-170 HP ultimatlely). I found one that is in good condition, but I am now wondering what the pros and cons are versus other options out there (whatever those may be). Do you guys have any ideas or experience?

Now, I've driven a 1980 320i, and let me tell you, those cars are STUPID FUN! WOW, the fling-ability of those vehicles is just IN-FREAKING-SANE!

I saw one on Craigslist for an extremely low price and I thought about buying it for a track car. As far as modification and aftermarket, I'm sorry but there isn't a huge tap for that so you're going to have a tough time finding parts for that, and when you do find them, you're going to wish you purchased and E36, LMAO!

I'm not too certain of the quirks that you'll have to battle with but I'm sure there will be a lot of them, just knowing how finicky BMW's tend to be as a whole and how old those vehicles are now. I hate to say it, but if you're looking for great fun in an older car that you don't have to spend a lot of your hard-earned cash on to make hyper fun, buy Japanese, most of the BMW enthusiasts are just that . . . .enthusiasts and purists. I personally don't have the money to be that way, which is why my track car is Japanese, but once my funds build up and I get more financial sponsors, I'll definitely be able to start shopping in the European market.

Oh well, but yes, I digress. . . . . .

A chance to purchase one of these vehicles is an awesome one! Jump on it, I throw in the disclaimer saying that you SHOULD buy one ONLY . . . and ONLY if you will NOT use this as your ONLY means of transportation, you DEFINITELY will need a backup car, I'm sorry, but old BMWs are tried and true, but things happen and you do not want to have to come out of your pocket for a crank-shaft bearing on a car that people don't even recognize when they see. LOL!

The 320s are great, virtually bulletproof cars. Built like tanks, but can rust easily if not taken care of. Yes you can get about 160-175hp out of a 320 engine. Weber carbs, headers, exhaust work and intake work will make that car sing. I'd love to have a 320i!! Keep us posted...

It's been a while since I have been here. I thought maybe noone was paying attention to this forum with so few posts. Anyway, i did buy one. 1982, white original paint, new recaro's (not stock though). everything works and the car looks like it has about 5 years of wear on it even though it is 25 years old. The engine is completely stock except for a long tube ceramic coated header. It really is a nice car, but I am currently having a cooling problem with it. I think the radiator is about 1/2 - 3/4 plugged up. Driving just about every day at the moment...

Rust is a big issue with e21's. That aside I had an 82 320is that was a great car. Slow, but really fun to drive. I occasionally think about getting another 320is for my wife to commute with. The gas mileage was low 30's if I remember right.
