Drove a 98 740i today , the car is perfect runs strong and everything works on it. The car has 139,000 miles the guy has all the maintenance records from when he bought it.
I'm thinking about buying it for back and forth to work.

My 91 318is has 207,000miles and runs strong, are the 740's as dependible as the 3 series? , and what should I look for to replace is the near future if I buy it.

Thanks for any info,

LUNG

The very early V8s from 1993-1994 had some problems with the engine blocks, a 1998 740i should be just fine. I would think with all the maintenance records the previous owner has, you should be ok. Just make sure there have been no big repeating problems seen in the records. I love the 740s, they are majestic and very usable. They are among the best built cars ever made! Keep us posted!

I'll post some pictures this weekend, so far it is a blast to drive, for some reason I'm not in a hurry to get anywhere in this thing I just kind of enjoy the ride .

Those E38s will run forever. I see tons of them and very few have major problems. What they do have is the potential to be fun fun to drive. I did an Eibach spring set, Dinan cold air intake, and Eismann exhaust on a customers a few months ago. What a car. The car does not roll at all into turns any more. The throttle response is much more crisp and the howl of the intake and exhaust is second only to my 8. Those are a few fun upgrades for that car. Enjoy the land yatch :)

Yep they are very reliable cars! Sounds like great upgrades to me!

I bought a '98 740i a couple of weeks ago and love it. Mine had 166,000 on it, but drives like a dream. There are not too many cars on the road that look sharper than a good E38....

There are some things to look out on the E38.. Most of them are not major issues, but you want to take care of them before they do become major. The valve cover gaskets leak pretty easily, the front suspension tends to wear a little fast. If you ever get some smoke from your tailpipes, have your oil seperater valve replaced immediatley. Some electrical problems here and there.. But if you keep up with the maintainance it is a great car!

Congrats!

I love those 740s. I almost bought one before I got the M5.

Got to watch those cats when they go, MAN that was 'spensive. And as stated earlier, it eats brake pads like appetizers.

I've discovered a couple of small fluid leaks in mine. I'm taking it to German Car Repair on Monday for a checkup if I can get an appointment. I suppose we'll see how expensive this thing can be....

Still, a blast to drive and even more fun to clean up and modify.

Get magnaflows welded in. They are cheap, free up some extra power, and have a warranty.
