Since I was kid first getting my license, I always wanted a BMW. I had a love affair with the 318i (E30) during college, but just never thought it was a car within my reach.
A BMW is like that gorgeous girl you see at a party, but are afraid to approach because she is too good for you. Or that great house in the trendy neighborhood that you dream of buying when you finally make it.
Having a Bimmer shows that you appreciate performance and quality. It says you have a great sense of style.
Now that I finally own my first BMW (and my second), there is no doubt in my mind that I will own at least one Bimmer for the rest of my life.
The girl is mine, the house is everything I thought it would be. I love my BMW...

Oh I totally understand what you mean. BMWs were taboo to me many years ago, as I knew nothing about them. I always loved looking at them, never really thought I would be able to afford one. I had 6 VW GTIs throughout my life and up until 5 years ago, never had a BMW. My friends Chris and Craig had BMWs that I love. Chris had the E30 325is and Craig had and still has his E30 M3.
When I got my 540i6 several years ago, I never knew how I made it through life without a BMW. I loved my 540.
Now I have this M5. And I cannot find a better sedan, much less a better performance car. In my opinion, the M5 is the best car ever made.
BMWs are remarkable cars and that is why my family drives them.

To answer the OP's question:
To me, BMW ownership means that no matter how ****ty my day is, no matter the weather, or if I lost my job, or if my girlfriend breaks up with me, or if my dog.... ferret runs away, I will always have a reason to smile when I wake up in the morning. Regardless of what I have to do that day or where I have to go, at the very least the trip there will be enjoyable.
Edit: Ironic timing?

Honestly, BMW was never the marque I aspired to. I was raised in a Porsche household, and that is what I have always wanted to drive when given the choice.
I happened into BMW. I was pretty uneducated on what BMWs really where, outside of their ///M cars I thought they were pretty boring. But, the very first time I twisted the key to my E30 325IS (I'm Chris from Mitch's post, by the way) I was transformed. For a few years before I got married my life revolved around my budding career on Wall St and my BMW and autocross addiction...I'm suprised my wife tollerated it. I spent all of my time working on, or autocrossing my car, I really loved it. All of my friends were fellow propeller-heads and on any given night there could have been 3 or 4 various Bimmers parked outside my garage as we all helped someone do something to their car...and drinking good German beer. The night Mitch bought his Ferrari we went to a meeting for my old BMW car club, the Blitzkrieg Bimmers.
When I sold it to get my Audi A4, a car I was really stoked to get, I remember immediately missing the open greenhouse and excellent visibility. I missed the simplicity and intuitive ergonomics. I missed the sound of that inline 6 at 6500rpm. I would eventually ruin my Audi trying to make it like my E30.
When I was in NY last week on business I spent one night at my Dad's place on Liong Island, he sold my car to a neighborhood kid. I drove by his house, and found that he wrecked it badly, and is rebuilding it once again. I'm glad it went to someone who loves it like I did.
Oh, I now drive a MkV GTI...I blame it on Mitch.

Great story Machschnell. I'll never forget that night when we went to Blitzkrieg Bimmers, that was sooo fun. Your 325 changed the way I thought about sport coupes.
Another great BMW aspect I love. This may sound daft, but when I am on the highway in the M5. I 100% totally feel like a great white shark swimming amongst minnows. I could kill virtually anything on the highway, sometimes the big sharks gotta eat so he does. I have no control over it. The M5 has been a life changing car for me. I've never known such an evil sinister car with one motive in life...to GO FAST any time we can. Damn I love that car.
Is it wrong to love a car sooo much? At least I ain't humpin' it yet. Already tried that on the 308 and 944. :)

I can see it now...it's late at night when Julie hears a bump in the night, she reaches for her husband to wake him only to find an empty space where he should be in the bed. Wielding her trusty bed-side lamp she quietly makes her way though the house, as she nears the garage there is the sound of panting mixed with an odd squeaking noise. Is it really in the garage, could it be that we left the door open and a critter is going through our stuff? Even worse, could a critter be staking his claim to my front seat as home for the night?!?!?
Sure enough, the noise IS in the garage, now the panting is faster and more labored, the squeaking more frantic, and now added to the mix is a rambling grumble that sounds more beast than man.
She flings the garage door open and hits the lights! There is Mitch, eyes glazed, lips quivering, pajamas around his ankles, and the faint smell of burned paint, carnuba wax, and crotch hangs in the air. There is a small drool trail running from his slackened bottom lip and onto the chest of his Tshirt. A man caught in his most vonerable moment, he immediatly tries to hoist his pants and make excuses about a flaw in the paint that he was trying to correct with a new method learned on ClubBimmer!!

I own an 850 need I say more. I have poured all my time and money into it, but when I walk up and see it I still can't believe that the car on the poster of my wall as a child is mine.
The ultimate driving machine for sure

Class.
I have been an enthusiast from birth - my dad was never really into cars, but loved his bimmers from his old 2002 and on. he used to tell me that a bmw is a REAL car. i think that is when it started for me - but i didnt really become a bmw enthusiast until i could actually drive.
my first car: an e36 325 manual. it was everything i wanted, and more than i ever needed. jet black, beige interior, it was perfect. i kept excellent care of the car, and put a lot of money into keeping it in perfect shape. but a few years ago i got into an unfortunate accident, and the car flipped end over end. i was driving in some pretty bad conditions, and there were some road hazards(unfinished and unmarked construction) in addition to a corkscrew off-ramp, and i was still somewhat inexperienced when it came to that kind of driving.

my cousin and i were in the car, and when i took my seatbelt off and fell to the roof, kicked my door open, and got my cousin out, i looked back at the machine that saved my life and thanked it. we didnt have a single scratch on us. i can honestly say i will never drive anything other than a bmw (for my daily driver, of course - track and weekends not included!).
now i have an e39, and love this car. i plan to keep this car forever as a part of my future FLEET of bmw's. i will never get enough of the ultimate driving machine.
