I've been wondering how long of a line of BMWs can we expect, if we get at least 350 BMW automobiles in a single parade and BMWs on average*(see asterisk) are 15 feet long or 180 inches, this is what I have found:
We want at least 350 BMW automobiles in the drive. That would secure a world record. I think there will be a LOT more cars, but lets use 350.
350 car X 15 feet is 5250 feet, if we have them bumper to bumper. Obviously we add 20 feet in between each car and our line of BMWs becomes 12,250 feet or 2.32 miles long. THAT is very impressive people. Can you imagine this?
Can you tell I am getting excited? :)
*a E30 325 is 175 inches long, a E36 325 is 174 inches long, a E39 525 is 188 inches long, E28s are 188 inches long. Average is approximately 15 feet.

We need to make sure that a helicopter is there to take aerial pictures.
I might be able to arrange that. Seriously. My roommate is the crew-chief on an Army UH-60 Blackhawk, and I think April 5th happens to fall on his drill weekend.
Does anyone else have/know someone who has access to a helicopter?
Mitch

A helicopter would be outstanding!! I don't know anyone with a heli though.

My roommate doesn't know for sure if he can swing that. In case he can, does anyone have access to a camera that would take a good picture from a mile up?
Mitch- we should also call local Atlanta news agencies, they have helicopters and would probably be willing to take some pics for us.

Hmmm that is a good questions. I think my brother has a bad ass digital camera with a killer zoom on it. I'll have to ask him.

Oh yeah we will definately alert the local media. I previously emailed Marietta Daily Journal with a link to the website to start building some hype. Believe me by April the way everybody is going at it, who won't know about this event? Cheers to everyone on this! I can't imagine how fun this is going to be!

Hey Mitch,
I can start shooting e-mails to radio stations. I'm sure we can get at least one to catch on. Might be some good exposure. Let me know what you want to do or what kind of message you want to send. I can always throw something together and let you approve of it.

yep if we end up with 500 BMWs it will be over 3 miles long. wow that would be killer
Mitch

That is very true. We only need 350 to shatter the record, but I am seriously expecting 400-500 cars. Its gonna be fun!

Definitely notify WSB. Captain Herb is a car nut and flies their heli and Neal Boortz drives a 6-series. We might even be able to get him to join us if we tie in the Fair Tax angle. A Fair Tax BMW rally up I-85. Neal will have half the Southeast coming to join us.

Mitch/Phil/et al,
Speaking of math, what number are we going for? A guy posted the following web address on BF.c and it looks like we need to clarify a few things:
http://www.guinnessworldrecords.com/records/travel_and_transport/cars/default.aspx
Biggest number of cars gathered by one brand appears to be 500 by FIAT. As to BMWs, 107 appears to be the number to break...which I think we can do. As to continuous convoy, I saw a listing for 420 Rolls-Royces in a single column. Just want to make sure we have all the current facts on what record we're trying to break and what the current record was. All I recall from one of the Mitch's OPs is 270+ BMWs in a continuous column is all we would need. Need to verify...then we need to make sure the Guiness paperwork accurately reflects what we're going for. Not trying to bring a downer, just want to make sure we set the whole thing up for success.
Cheers,
Gibber

This is exactly what I was referring to, before we can say "Hey, we need this many BMW's meeting at this place at this time on this day" we need to first know exactly what we're shooting for.
No doubt about it, this is going to be a HUGE event with a LOT . . . and I mean A LOT, of BMW's but we can't shoot for a goal that doesn't have some sense of tangibility to it :icon18:

I used to be into photography, I have a pretty bad ass cannon.

I would count on more than 20 feet between each car. My guess is 4 miles if you get 350 cars. What are the rules for continuity? What if some other car cuts in. You have to consider that will obstruct several exits. It sounds awesome.
Mitch
01-22-2008, 10:03 PM
Hi everyone, since we had to move the event from Gwinnett Arena to Chateau Elan, we had to cancel plans with Gwinnett PD and I contacted Hall County Sheriffs Department. They will be willing to help.
We are not going to need a parade permit. It will not hurt the world record if someone breaks in the parade line, that is expected to happen, all while I wish it would not happen.
I think a hot air balloon would be really cool, problem is....once we start the parade they will most likely not be able to photograph us after we leave Chateau Elan. Still worth looking into!

I am actually considering a dash cam for this one. Especially If I find drivers for the 318i, And the e36 M3. As much as I wanted to drive The old 318i, I have to reconsider since The e30 M3 should be in the stable by then. Stig? Wanna drive the e36? I can't drive all of 'em. Maybe since you drive the Miazda daily, the old M10 318i with it's 45 ponies is more your speed! J/K!
