Was doing a search on BFc and it looks as if our transmissions can take anything Dexron III and above. Is this true, I was talking to my mechanic and he was telling me that my transmission needs the BMW Fluid which just happens to be . . . about 20 bucks a liter. NOW, I don't HAVE 20 bucks a liter, especially if she needs like 10 liters.

Does anyone know the brevity of this concept that our transmissions need a specific type of ATF? I drive a 1995 540i by the way, just incase anyone was wondering . . . that has the M60B40 transmission.

Thank you!

I thought that BMW autos were GM units? (so the DexIII would be what you wanted). Actually you could
even use the Mercon but it will shift a bit harder I believe......

I changed out my "lifetime" tranny fluid w/ RP Synchromax at appox 100K miles on my '97 e39 540/6. I have 136K miles on it now and shifting is great (especially in NVA in the winter) w/ no issues.

I can NOT speak for the e34 540/6 . . . you may want to check and see if the e34 and e39 6-speed trannys are the same.

Here's a thread that may be of interest:

I have 106k on my e39 540i and I am scared as hell to replace the fluid in my tranny...

Heard so many horror stories about it. Though it would be nice to get better mileage and have smoother shifts.

I know in the vw tuning circle, that GM syncromesh is the bomb. Doesn't last forevery, but gets rid of grinding etc. People swear by it. probably already a favorite for the miata.

I guess BMW is the same ans VAG (aka VW audi group) in that they want their fluids to be special. aka, they get more money. very likely that you just get the ones that fit the standard and flush the old stuff out.
