View Full Version : Anyone a speaker expert?
im shopping around for 2 12 inch subs, and a set of 6x9s and i need help
i dont know much about subs and i have no idea where to start looking, i really like the kicker L5s and L7s but i dont know the difference between the two, alot of people are saying that JL makes subs that are crisper than those but they look amazing in a BMW trunk, and i was looking at some Pioneers too
anyone have an opinion?

Budget? How much space are you willing to give up? How much output do you need? Sound quality is important?
Are you sure you need 2 12s?
Have an amp picked out? Own one?

not sure what you mean by space but my trunk is used for parts that go on my car within a week, the backseat does just fine for that too
i would like 2 12s just because i listen to mostly hip hop, rock, and reggae, and i figured the bigger the speaker the deeper the bass, i dont want too deep but i dont want too high either, figured 2 12s would be in between
no amp yet i was gonne go with a rockford fosgate or audiobahn, something affordable
basically im looking for subs that are deep but have good Sound quality i dont need anything LOUD (no competition price speakers) but i also want it to be somewhat loud
so average loudness and high quality and crispness
i was thinking about spending $1000 on everything so the JLs and Kickers are out of the question
alpines and pioneers seem to get very good reviews for their 12s, so something in that range would be good
i know you can steer me in the right direction halston ;)

I have a box that holds 2 12's I think, might can even be mounted to trunk lemme go see.

12s are not just 'guaranteed' to have more output and play deeper bass. We have to consider proper box size, installation and tuning.
I was asking trunk space as in a properly sized box for two 12s that have decent output is going to be quite large. Close to consuming your whole trunk.
Go with an Rockford amp over audiobahn... please! I think maybe a sub offering from Alpine, rockford amp might do well for your budget and needs.

ok so anything from alpine or do you have anything specific in mind? i was looking on www.onlinecarstereo.com and they have ratings and whatnot thats what i was going by, thats why i figured alpines or pioneer, ok so ima go with a rockford amp and i guess ill browse around for some alpines
what about the box, do you think i should have one made for my trunk or just buy one off of craigslist or something?
and if you do think i should have one made what should i tell em? just to take up as much space as they need to make the most output?
and what do you think for 6x9s and amp, my speakers are blown, the stock door speakers on an M3 are amazing but the back speakers are F'ed

1. Unplug and remove your rear 6x9s. They are worthless in the grand scheme of things and just 'attempt' to play midbass and sub bass. The tweeters are just rear fill which is not the best for overall SQ.
2. Subwoofer - 12" Dual 2ohm Voicecoil Imgage Dynamics IDMAX:
http://woofersetc.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=product.display&Product_ID=2031
Wire to 1ohm:
http://www.the12volt.com/12voltimages/1_2ohm_dvc_1ohm.gif
3. Amplifier - Rockford Punch 1000W Mono - 1ohm Stable:
http://www.woofersetc.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=product.display&Product_ID=6073
4. Enclosure - Sub wants 1.30 to 1.57 in a sealed enclosure. This enclosure it 1.60 cubic feet, minus out the space the subwoofer takes up and you are golden.
http://www.hifisoundconnection.com/Shop/Control/Product/fp/vpid/1334149/vpcsid/0/SFV/30046
~1000 dollars and it will POUND and have midfi to lower hifi SQ.
Cliffs - 1000W RMS Single 12 "Super Woofer" - 1000W RMS Mono 1ohm Stable Amp - 1.6 cubic foot sealed enclosure
Beat down that block!

i was wanting to spend a grand on the entire system... like 6x9s and subs plus the amps, i still want some highs, and i honestly dont need a 1000 watt sub, thats too intense :)

Ok let me rework.
You want a front stage with amp as well?
List everything you want...
ok i want 2 6x9s with an amp, loud and crisp
i want subwoofers (id prefer 2 12s) that dont have to be loud just deep and crisp, the less distortion the better and an amp for that too
im just looking for a good set of subs that beat hard they dont have to be heard a mile away as long as it impresses me its fine
trying to keep it around a grand
tweeters are fine i originally just wanted 6x9s and an amp but i figured i have a few extra bucs to spend on some subs

Look, we need to get you off the 6x9s with an amp. If you amp rear drivers it is going to sound terrible... it is going to sound like you went to a concert and then stood with your back towards the stage.
Let's get a decent component set in the front, amp and dual 10s in the back. Why do you want two 12s? It is just not needed.
This sound like something you could do? The front speakers in an HK e36 are terrible. The plastic stock tweeters are ear choppers at anything over 50% volume and the midbass drivers are probably already blown and produce close to zero midbass...

Ok here we go...
Front Stage - Run it 'split' as a component set:
http://woofersetc.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=product.display&Product_ID=5835
Front Stage Amp:
http://www.woofersetc.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=product.display&Product_ID=6034
Since you really want 12s get 2 of these: Dual 2ohm Voice Coil
http://www.woofersetc.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=product.display&Product_ID=2530
Amplifier - Run @ 500W RMS @ 2ohm
http://www.woofersetc.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=product.display&Product_ID=6073
http://www.the12volt.com/12voltimages/2_2ohm_dvc_2ohm.gif
Enclosure:
http://www.woofersetc.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=product.display&Product_ID=3519
Total - 1059.94
We could probably find a cheaper subwoofer amp but the Rockford's have execptional subwoofer control. Great dampening and extra capacitance... very good for subwoofers.
wow shows how much i know about speakers, i wasnt aware you could run a 1 channel amp through 2 speakers, the only reason i want a front stage is cuz my current speakers are blown, and i want an amp for it so you can hear it over the bass

Just follow the wiring guide and you will have it :)
They are all blown. That is why BSW is in business ;)
wacha mean they are all blown? im pretty sure my tweeters are working fine, ok, so those speakers for the inside of the car are good? never heard of em, and that amp is effin expensive but if you think it will make the alpines bump im ordering em
im putting the order in about 12 days from now, so if you figure out something better by then let me know, i do like those subs
i still think i could find a local box for cheaper, whats so special about that one?

The tweeters rarely actually completely fail and 'blow' because they are plastic. The midrange and midbass drivers are all paper cone with foam surrounds. Thus they fail and go bad and make farting noises or cease to play at all.
The rockford? It is a 1000W RMS mono amp that is one ohm stable. You have to pay to play :) I am sure there are some cheaper options but for subs rockford amps are great.

Will do. You will be happy with the above setup.

Cheaper than 120 dollars? A local shop building decent boxes is going to be at least that. Have you called around asking about boxes?
Nothing special except it is sized properly for the subs.

i went to onlinecarstereo.com and found the rockford for 30 bucs cheaper, the alpines for a doller each cheaper, and i looked for the box and they only had the slotted one but it was 30 bucs cheaper, i want a sealed box tho
im tryin to save any penny i can :) and it says ground shipping is free on that site
alright like i said ordering in 12 days, thanks for the help halston
so pretty much any monster cables work for the setup? aaaaan what about fuses?
i was gonne go to a shop to get em put in just to have some warrenty on it just in case, but i dont think it will be necessary

Stock Speaker Sizes Front
5.25" Midbass Kick Panel
2.5" Midrange - deleted with amp + components(Just unplug it)
5/8" Tweeter - New will be 1" Silk Dome(woot)
Stock Speakers Sizes Rear
4" Midbass
5/8" Tweeter
Remove these, unplug and put the grill back on. We are running now real fill. Strong front sound stage + bass in the trunk. That is how SQ is done ;)
Halston is the man when it comes to audio stuff.

Bump in the doors? There is no 'cheap' way to do it... You want low end of some powerful midbass?
If you don't want a subwoofer then get your dremel out and amp a 6.5" component set. 6.5" midbass in the kicks and 1" silk dome tweeter in the doors.

Buy a nice amp installation kit and a distribution block. Fuse will be in the kit or purchase some extras. I didn't look at the requires but a 100-150a should be just fine.
cant i just unplug the blown speakers? im afraid i wont be able to hear the highs with those alpines kicking all that power from that amp
dinanm3atl
03-20-2009, 12:36 AM
You will have front components running at 60-70W RMS. You will hear them just fine.
Unplug the midrange and your rear speakers(remove these as well).
alright you know better than me, ima go ahead and assume this is what you would do for your car haha
and what distribution block would you recommend? i mean its only 2 amps but i guess it makes sence, and is the fuse that comes with the gear good enough?
and how much power is this setup gonne rob from my alternator?
haha sorry for all the questions but im not too great with speakers
one last thing before i quit yapping on this thread, what should i get to minimize if not eliminate rattleing, if anything rattles ima go apes**t

It is two 12s. It is going to rattle, there will be some rattles in an e36. You can fix some and some will require a lot of work to fix. Not impossible.
No, this is not what I would do to my car. I don't want two 12s and I would have leftover money to run a different speaker set in the front. With that said it is not bad equipment.
It is going to draw whatever the amps draw. It is not going to be a big deal. It isn't that much audio equipment. If you have the volume up high and it has heavy bass you will notice some lights dimming more than likely.

honestly id be happy with 1 10 inch in the trunk if that meant better SQ for the inside speakers, that is all i was gonne do originally but i had a few extra bucs to spend
so far i like this system but if you can find something for the same price that concentrates on highs and mids more for the front stage etc. id much rather go with that route
like i said subs arent that important, i just figured why not
