mine is doing the same even after changing the reservoir, I'm taking a guess that the power steering pump is on its last leg

sounds like air is in the system. Check the levels and if its full, look for foam or bubbles, might be a hole in the supply line sucking air in.

Also check the belts, could just be slipping.

Yes it is the PS pump itself.

Mine does that when it gets low on fluid. Especially when it is cold outside. I don't know where the fluid goes. I need to refill every 3 months or so.

marshall, bust out a black light and go looking for glowing spots man. If you dont find a leak then the pump is burning fluid.

My e28 does it. Kind of 'normal. If it is REALLY cold and you fire the car up and ask for instant power steering it will lead to noises like this. First turn from a cold start my e28 does it and never hear a peep from it again.

I would check the fluid level, make sure you have no leaks and continue on :) Wait for warmer weather!

Thanks, I did not know a pump could burn fluid. Is this the beginning of the end of the pump?

Could be, but the only case of that i have seen myself, was just a seal that was causing the fluid to leak past the shaft onto the pump housing and burn off.

If you get low and fill up and noise goes away... Keep on trucking!

Cheers for all the input, bit of a nightmare getting to it but got there in the end, was needing topped up, was almost empty, like driving a bloody tank at times. Thanks for all your help, car is now up for sale, feel free to email me for any info.
