Hey all, I just got a very tempting offer . . .a 2002, a guy I work with has one (he races Vintage SCCA/NASA/BMWCCA) and he's gonna let me have it for 1500. He says it runs and drives fine, has Recaro seats, the only problem with it is he says it's not pretty. It's primer gray.

I basically just need it as a daily driver, so . . .as a daily driver . . .would it work out? 1500 bucks. How reliable are these? He says it has just over 130k miles on it. That's less than any BMW I've owned before, LOL!

Let me know what you think guys . . .

Ehhhhh

Not very reliable... Probably a mechanical injection car which is FARRRR from reliable.

Mechanical injection?

Yes. That car should have a carb or mechanical fuel injection. Neither are DD reliable really. It can be made more reliable but nothing I would actual bet my job on.

What's mechanical fuel injection? I'm confused as to what that may mean . . .

rather than electronic fire injectors it basically has a distributor for fuel in addition to the spark distributer

Dave, I think you might be the first guy who has a 'Stang and is considering a 2002 for a DD. Get an E30 for that money, probably far more reliable.

2002 = teh cool, but not teh reliable.

So basically, a 2002 is a cool car to have when you want to meet up with your BMW buddies, but a daily driver it is not?

Yeah. I mean, you could DD if you wanted to, but why? For that price, you can get a reliable E30. If you don't care all that much about cosmetics, get the newer car. Almost always more reliable.

Okay, yeah, I just wanted something that I could enjoy driving while my Mustang is parked up. And when she goes to the sponsors, if an event pops up, bam, got a rear drive car, LOL!

I love BMW, so when he said he had that, I was like, why not?

LOL!

It would be a cool car to have and drive occasionally, like on the weekends or something. Like imagine if you had a '67 Skyline GTR KPGC-110. It would be awesome to drive, but you wouldn't want to drive it every day.

Yeah, it makes sense. I might pick it up to mess around with, but not for a DD. If you want a decently cheap RWD car that won't cost too much to fix, get an E30. And I am in no way biased....

Sorry for the double post.
And yeah, you can't DD every car, some just aren't made that way.

And if you get an E30, make sure it is stick. Mine is back in the shop because the auto tranny hates me or something. Get to drive my dad's Merc though.

That is why I love Weedawg's car so much, I love '02s and would always have the hankering to put a M engine in it!

Dave.. Why don't you just get Hari's E30? He's fixed the clutch/tranny, did some preventative maint., already and is good to go?

I think he wants $1800 or something. And you already have E30 experience, no? :).

Funny how 2002's just rust away. Once the the 02 is gone a perfect running M10 is all that remains. STILL RUNNING.

I am partial to SVT Focus for a DD. I just got 30mpg and get amazing grip.

I would even hand over my keys do the "Famous Black Stig" can try out my ride.

I have DD'd my 2002 for 7 years now with no issues. Mechanically these cars are very reliable, just keep them out of salt and the body will be fine too.

If it is fuel injected or has a carb, you can drive it every day. The only issue is what was done to make it a race car. If it has a wicked cam or something it may be a bit much. I was driving mine for almost a year EVERY DAY!!! rain, shine, snow. No heat or A\C in mine either.
I have a hot motor with a mechanical 38\38 with custom jets, bumped cam, headers, ect...
Put electronic ignition on it and drive the crap out of it!!! Or call me and give me the guys number so I can by it and drive the crap out of it.

Take this all with a grain of salt. This is coming from a guy who drove a 1956 Chevy for 9 years as his only car (again no heat or A\C)

Life's too short to drive a dull car. If you drive an 02 every day, every trip you take will be fun, or at least exciting.

I have a few customers that drive their 2002 almost everyday and dont seem to have many issues at all.
