They're actually not all that fast. But extremely kick-ass nonetheless.

For the size and weight faster than a e30 m3.

Meh, maybe in a drag race.
I went for a balls-out ride in an e28 M5 with a BMWCCA driving instructor (it was his car) and wasn't really impressed. They're very cool for what they are, but not really fast. It wasn't even as fast as my car, and my car is a decrepit old piece of sh*t. (ask Halston! It's a 95 )

Philip, I never said your car. I said a e30 m3. They had a article in the Roundel a month or two ago About this.

Yeah it probably is faster than an e30 M3 in a drag race. I know what you're saying.
I guess I just expected more because of the "big bad ///M5 badge". I've been in e39 and e60 M5s before that, so I basically expected the e28 to be some larger than life supercar in sedan's clothing, but it isn't. It's a super nice hot-rodded e28, but nothing scary fast.
Hell I'd still take one though, they kick ass.

You have to take it for what it was in 1988. The fastest sedan in the world. Think of what else was for sale at the time.

US Version was 256hp and weighed in at 3400lb. It is quite similar in terms of accelaration to a 1995 M3 actually. The transmission is a close ratio Getrag unit and you can rip through the gears if you are really pushing it. I would say a drivers race.

On a small tidbit but IIRC the e28 M5 is the rarest of the 'normal production' M cars. An M1 is rarer but I don't see it has a production car really.

In terms of on track performance. I would say a good driver could outrun the e30 M3 on the track due to the top end power and pull of the M5. Stay close to the M3 through the corners and the straights are yours for the taking.

If I was told to chose an M5 I would be torn between an e28 and e34. The nod would probably go to the e28 because it is BMW M division at it's finest.

I love that car. I feel the same that it is Motorsports at their best.

I agree. The e34 M5 is the last of the hand-built M cars.

Meh

e34 are too hit and miss for me. Bad experience with them when working in shops.
