View Full Version : Hyundai Genesis

I just read an article about Hyundai. Not only have they gotten out of the $10,000 car market, they now offer a $40,000 car called the Genesis (like the Genesis program from "Star Trek II; Wrath of Khan"). In the article/adversitement, they claim more HP than a BMW 550i and more space than a 760Li.
Discuss.

Yah cause the E60 and E65 are such stellar cars...
That shows you just don't know.
They make a GREAT car and the Genesis will SMASH some perceived 'luxury' car market... Stuff that comes standard(BT,MP3,iPod, AC Seats, etc etc etc) cost THOUSANDS in BMW and Benz and others.

Me no cares. It isn't like they are going to take a chunk out of BMW's target audience. Most people who buy new BMW's are way too badge/status oriented to ever drive a Hyundai, so they will continue to buy the BMW.

I have way more respect for someone driving an old beat up e30/civic ect. then I ever will for someone that buys a hyundai, kia, geo, suzuki....i just dont understand why people buy those turds
for the same price, you can get a certified preowned..whatever and be better off on pretty much every aspect.

Not at any price. I have known people to own them. Parts actually do just fall off. The engineers don't even take repairing cars into consideration (I tried replacing a headlight on one and it broke more during repair). You actually can't work on them (I had speacial tools that barely worked). When they break so bad they no longer drive, you just throw your Hyundai in the dumpster and buy a new car.

What you guys don't know is how remarkably expensive parts are for Hyundais. How about a $3000 clutch job on a Tiburon?? YIKES that is 1500 more than a clutch job on my Ferrari.
All I have to say is, ALL Asian car companies want their cars to resemble a Mercedes or BMW. To them, the German cars are the penultimate cars. Look at the Lexus LS series, damn thing looks about identical to the previous year Mercedes E class.
Imitation is the best form of flattery. AND no, I'd never ever pay $40k for a Korean car. Not in ten million years.

Crikey.
I didn't realize this forum was so BMW elitist. No offense to anyone.
Hyundai cars were crap when they first came to the states. I will admit that but they have come a LONGGGGGGGG way since that time. They have made some quite nice cars that I have enjoyed as rental cars on various travels. I have also enjoyed driving some that were modified that were a blast to drive and would make a great DD.
The Asian car makers have kicked it up a notch recently and they are coming on strong. Everyone said when Honda came to this country it was all cheap Asian crap that was going to fall apart. Many of their first cars, Toyota included, were just like first and second gen Hyundai's here in the states. Not all that great but are you going to say Honda and Toyota just make **** now? Come on, let's be realistic.
Rumor has it that the Genesis won't have any badges to say 'what it is' so when you first see it you will probably just wonder what it is. Look what Hyundai has 'coming soon'
375hp 6sp V8 Coupe
Turbo RWD 6sp 'Tiburon'
Those 2 cars are exciting for the segment they are coming into when there really has been nothing new except the same old same old. Nice to see things stirred up with new offerings.
The comment about the TVs is just plain wrong. Here is a funny story for you on LCDs. Hanns-G AKA I-Inc is an LCD producer in Asia. They made LCD computer monitors, they sell their actual LCDs to companies like Dell. Dell sells a certain model for ~300 dollars. Under the Hanns-G brand you can have it for 169.99 off Newegg or TigerDirect.
Ever seen one of those Vizio 'cheap crappy blah blah blah' HD LCD TVs in action? Yah it is a great picture and sometimes 1/2 of the cost of a name brand.
Saying oh I won't buy Hanns-G because it is cheap crap is dumb. There may be more to the story than is on the surface for you to see. If you won't give a car a chance before you have even driven it then I can't help you. Commenting how it is going to fall apart after 2 years on a car that is not even released is a bit of a stretch.
You know where Nikon(we can argue who is better but it is either the number 1 or number 2 camera maker in the world) gets their exceptional LCDs for their dSLRs?(They kill Canon in this)...

I want to weigh in on this one, what with my dad being in the automobile warranty business and having sold Hyundai cars for about a month in the early 90s.
Back then, they WERE pure junk. The cars that sat on the showroom and were NEVER driven had crap falling off of them all the time. Not just in the interior where there was some actual use, but from the underside of the car and on the body. Pure crap. I was admonished and sent home from the dealership on my first day for wearing a suit. As the owner put it, their customers generally didn't relate to people in a suit and their salesmen did better in jeans and a polo shirt. In a month I didn't sell a single car, it was misery. I went to the Dodge dealer down the street and within 3 months I was their top performer. It wasn't me, it was the cars.
Now? My father confirmed that they are on par with Honda and Toyota for reliability and service claims. They are every bit as good as any of the other Asian cars that I will never own.
The value proposition really is off the charts. Great amenities, decent performance, the best factory warranty in the industry, and good looking in a very generic way. Hell, they even left the badge off the front of the Genesis to save the driver embarrasment when he has the car valet parked (hehehe...yeah, as if a Hyundia driver would pay someone to park their car).
I can see why someone who isn't a car enthusiat would buy one.

Now if you can just explain the thought process on people buying Kia's or suzuki's I might just lump them in with stuff like honda/toyota, rather then the pure crap section.
that being said....I would still ever own one. toyota is about the lowest grade car I can even comprehend owning...and that isnt very likely.
And the debadging of the car is simply hilarious! Reminds me of saturns slogan "thats a saturn?!" They may as well just come out and say "yeah we know they are crap, and you will get no respect driving it...buuut..."

I guess if your goal is to 'impress' people while driving then it may not be the car for you.
From paper numbers it seems like a damn good car for the price. Call me not a 'car enthusiasts' all you want but I think we all know that is not true.
Here is my question for many of you. I am not a big fan of buying new as it is kind of dumb financially. How can you say "toyota is the lowest grade car I could even comprehend owning" yet you drive/own a 1995 E36 M3. I wouldn't put that at the top of BMWs 'quality' chart. If you are looking for a nice car to drive to and from work, get decent mileage than a Camry is an exceptional car and the interior is more comfortable, gets better mileage and seats a family a 4 much more comfortably.
Just saying. Branch our, try something new.

Not so much using the car to impress people, but I don't think someone in a high wealth bracket will want to pull up to the country club in a Hyundai. Remember the VW Phaeton? Great car in everyway. Failed because people had a hard time paying , what...$80K for a toned down A8 Audi with a funky motor and a huge VW emblem on the nose.
There is a reason these Asian companies are so successful, they know who they are selling to and what those customer's needs are. Porsche markets sports cars to sports car enthusiasts, Hyundia markets bang for the buck value and reliability/ease of ownership to people that have that as a motivating factor in their decision making process. Not geared to driving excitement and passion because that isn't what their customer's are looking for, but rather the polar opposite of that.
Would I drive one? Well, I am considering a job that would require a lot of traveling by car. Would I rather beat on a Hyundai or a BMW/Audi/VW? Though none of you will ever see it or hear about it, I could see how it would make sence.

I drive what I drive for my reasons. Regardless of the opinions of people I hold in high regard, and the opinions from those that I think are douchenozzles.
Same goes for Hyundai, Toyota, Honda, and so forth. Their customers are their customers because they want something that compares well to the standard that was set by BMW in a package that they can afford. The comparisons made to the BMW by both Pontiac (G8) and Hyundai with the Genesis are legit. Good for them, after trying to copy the Germans for the better part of a decade they have finally come close to getting it right. They don't claim to be inovators, only that they have blatently done their best to mimic that for which has made BMW the benchmark.
I have a hard time throwing stones at that.

Escort Cosworth?
Think of the Focus RS as the Escort Cosworth 2.0
Look at these 2 cars...
The new RS will have 280hp and 295lb/ft of torque. Yes sir. You can't argue it is not a good chassis since Ford does quite well in WRC :)

I found a picture of a 2004 Sonata (not really). This is just a metaphor for what I think of 7 year old Hyundai

I am going to stop now, after seeing that picture.:(
On a serious note, I don't really drink, I am only 17.
You must be the only 17 year old on the planet that doesn't drink. Good for you, bro!

Not a fanboi. I don't want a sonata. I want the Genesis as it looks very promising on paper.
I sent Philip a picture today and he said "Oh wow, is that the new Bentley?"

I believe that the phrase I am looking for is pWnEd.

Haha, that might be an exaggeration, but thanks. And the weird part is I probably could drink in my house if I wanted to. My parents are both British, so they started drinking before they were like 16. If I wanted to have a beer or a glass of wine with dinner, they probably would let me, but I stick with soda and milk.

Actually that is not how it went down at all.
He sent me a picture and said "what do you think that is?"
And I said "well, it looks too cheap to be a new Bentley but the trunk badge looks like Bentley wings."
Then I saw the Lexus knock-off front end, and the Infiniti knock-off side view, and realized it was the new Hyundai with a Bentley badge on the trunk.

Wrong...
Should have saved it.
I just send you random links via google talk and you said "Oh wow is that the(or maybe a) new Bentley"
Then I said "No" "Take a guess"
Then what you said happened. That is the real story.
It is ok that you liked it originally but then once you found out your mind wouldn't let you like it you found faults. It is ok :)

I never said it had faults. I said it looks like a blatant knock-off of other cars, and that is Hyundai's M.O. and that's ok. It works for them, it sells a lot of cars.
I also never said I didn't like the Genesis. However the only thing that resembled Bentley to me on that car was the Bentley badge on the trunk. If you just showed me the front of it I would have said "it looks like a new Lexus"

Genesis badging is a Bentley Knockoff.

Everyone is copying the luxury cars because people want that 'look'.
Everyone ****s on Bangle for changing up a design... roflmao

There's a happy medium between plagiarism and recklessness.

ALL of the Asian carmakers rip off the Germans, there is absolutely no suprise there!! Lexus is a blatant BMW copycat, even their model nomenclature and badges look like that on a Bimmer. Now, they are even as expensive as BMW.
So, instead of inovating they copy and modify the original design to match their demographic's needs. And they are kicking America's and Germany's butts in sales. And reliability, and brand loyalty.

When I see anyone in a Lexus, I'm sure they secretly long for a BMW or Mercedes. Woulda, coulda shoulda bought a BMW.

This says it all. Japanese cars just don't break down as much as Euro cars do. Hyundai's have really come a long way. I love some euro cars though, they just aren't put together as well. sad but true.
Japan just added the most expensive and biggest part of the international space station. They also have excellent math and science programs. America is having many problems because the education system has dropped the ball on these two items.

I doubt that they do. who would want to buy a car that will decrease in value more than another car?

HAHA, I actually told a good friend of mine to buy a lexus, because he wanted something with good ride quality, decent go, and would never break.
he got an IS300 and is very happy with it. Its a great car, I just like mine better :)

Yeah, and remember the motor blew in the 1st month he owned it. Lexus did pay for a new one though.

Let's do an experiment, every time you see a car being towed take a picture. I'll bet you see far more german cars than japanese. most likely they will be brand new mercedes.

Or any model year Mercedes for that matter. LOL!
>_>
<_<
BMW's are surprisingly reliable as far as running is concerned, and even THEN, I reserve that statement for cars that are pre-ESC-DSM-TCS-LOL-WTF-BBQ
I've heard so many horror stories from Jon Allen and Philip that I can't warrant the purchase of a newer BMW . . .if I do, I'd make it such a stripped down version that even M3 CSL owners would say "Damn . . .you ain't got SH**!"
EDIT:
ALSO, I don't care what anyone here says, I show no bias towards anything and in this video:

The Genesis fits RIGHT IN with it's high-dollar competitors and looks absolutely stunning. I'd drift one . . . LMAO!
EDIT x2 . . . for the Tiburon naysayers . . . *sigh* I can do this all day . . . http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P3FdV6vQQZs

Dave, I love you brother, but lets re-open this post in 2 years (CB's 3rd aniversary). Hyundai has A LOT to prove to me. I agree there is a possibility this Genesis may be a good car, but who would buy one hoping it is not a complete POS? BMW has put fantastic cars on the road a hell of a lot longer. Plus $40k is a lot of money, especially for a 1st generation model.
As for Japanese, not sold there either. DSM anyone??? I have worked on DSM and they have more problems than anything else. Honda, Toyota, and Nissan are expensive when you need to maintain or repair as well. Anyone want to give me an "amen" to I see more Nissan Altimas on the side of the road than anything else?

yup that is one of the reasons i will not buy a new car, you dont know what is going to go wrong.
and yes reputation has ALOT to do with it. When they prove thier cars will perform and last for 5-10 years for a decent price I will consider it. Untill then, ill let the more faithful test things out.

Or BMW. They break down a lot of you are looking at them as a whole. They don't rank too great on the list of initial quality either right now. They are not what they used to be.
I just don't understand how people hate and argue and debate on something they have no experience in. That is one of my pet peeves...
Hyundai's suck. Have you owned one? Driven one for longer than 6 minutes? No?
Then how do you know? Cause you read it on a forum and preconceived notions tell you they suck?
