Hello All
I Have A 1996 318ti And When Idling It Has A Noise, Thats Sounds Like A Chain Tensioner Is Broken, Took The Front Cover Off But The Tensioner Rails Are Good. Any Suggestions?????????

Could be, sounds like a case for Dr Bimmer, our resident BMW Specialist.

Is the DR out? I don't know. Maybe HE needs a DR? :)

What's the deal. never heard of major chain rattle on those cars. Idle pulleys can make a bunch of noise. Still having the problem?

Problem could either be Vanos or chain tensioner. I would replace the lower chain tensioner first and then work on the upper tensioner/vanos unit. I am actually ordering a replacent from Drvanos today.

Yeah I was going to say a tensioner could be the Vanos, it always sounds like a bad bearing.

318 M42 M44 motor do not have vanos. Remove belts see if it goes away with no belts on it. If not install tensoiner they go bad. Remove valve cover and check for slop in cam chain also.

According to what I have been reading tonight it certainly sounds like the tensioner. This is one of the few problems with this well built 4 banger. Not really a problem but a normal wear and tear kinda thing.
