View Full Version : May have a blown head gasket

Has anyone ever heard of or experienced this problem?? I was driving home from the Braves game the other night in my 191,000 mile 94 325is. When I got to my exit ramp and came to a stop, the oil light and the battery light came on and the car shut off on me and would not start back up. There was a lot of smoke coming from under the hood and it smelt like some serious oil or rubber when I smelt inside the wheel well. My local auto shop says that they can not work on the car because it isn't their specialty and gave me the number to Massey Automotive off the 120 loop in Marietta. Does anyone know about how much it will cost to fix if it is a blown head gasket? Does anyone have any other shop they reccommend to repair BMW's close to Kennesaw or Marietta area? Massey Auto wants $115 to run a diagnostic which I am guessing that is pretty typical from what I have been hearing so far. Any input or advice is greatly appreciated. The car will start up but is making engine noise and exhaust combustion is coming from the radiator. I just hope it doesn't end up costing so much that I have to sell her. It's an actual M-Technic car.

DAAAAMN man NOOOOOOO!! I'm sorry to hear that man. We need one of our technicians to chime in here. Exhaust gases in the radiator is not good my friend. Keep us posted....:(

Trout, you are my newest idol on Club Bimmer . . . .more posts like that and you might take Phil's spot, LOL!
Seth, I dunno, you may have a blown HG but usually there are more vociferous symptoms than that . . .mainly oil collecting around the engine where the head meets the block . . .white smoke from the exhaust . . .oil in coolant and/or vice versa . . . I would say swing it by my house and we can take a look at her, crack her open and get to work . . .wait . . .am I still talking about cars?
Yeah . . .anyhow, check for those things, see if you have a milkey solution where your oil used to be, rev the engine check for hesitation, check for white smoke . . .also, I know this sounds goofy, but smell your exhaust, if it smells sweet you're most likely burning coolant.

Its possible that your "exhaust gas" may be a smoked (or missing) belt deflection pulley. Its located just behind the radiator and if the bearing locks up it will smoke the belt. It will also make the car hard to start due to drag on the belt. Did the temp gauge spike to hot?

Thanks Stig - us non BMW owners (yet BMW lovers) have to stick together
Phil - I would never try to take your spot.
The fact your engine cut off is bad, but a blown head gasket is not that big of a problem. I will be fixing my leaky one this weekend and it is a cheap fix. Hopefully your EMS shut your motor down because of the temperature and nothing else. A little motor oil leaking out and burning off of your motor should not hurt anything. Keep an eye on it because it can get really serious really fast. Just don't drive and/or keep your fluids in check. I have been driving my car for a month with a slight leak and have damaged nothing.

It "could" be a blown head gasket but did anything happen leading up to this? Or did you stop and then "poof"?

:nono:With what was described I wouldn't recommend driving, running or revving the engine what so ever. Running it at all may end it all together. If you really suspect a blown head gasket and it's not obvious due to coolant in the oil or vice versa then do a compression test.

No, it was running just fine before it "just stopped and poofed" on me. lol You know though, thinking back, there were a couple of times I think while I was in the parking lot at Turner Field following everybody around the cones and down the isles looking for a spot that the car kind of stalled on me. I don't think it was because of me and letting out the clutch too soon without giving gas.. (I do know how to drive a stick in traffic without a car stalling on me) You think that may tie into it??

OK.... here's the deal.... The M-Technic is DEAD!!!! Plain and simple. It will cost me about $3,500 to fix it up. The Mechanic told me that the Cylinder Head would have to be replaced and also the Coolant Reservoir Tank is busted and he thinks the radiator might be too. Any bids on this Junker???

1 DOLLAR!
No, seriously . . .it's going to cost that much? I highly doubt that . . . I would say keep your car, it's very beautiful, there are a LOT of connections on this forum. Talk to Philip, Alan, Jon Alan, Mitch . . .these guys are a GREAT source for finding the best deals and I'm sure they can get you going for under that price in parts. And who knows, they may even be able to get you a hook up on the labor.
I say ride it out until it's absolutely positive that you're going to have to sell, lots of resources available here bro!

No joke Seth, you must not sell that car with those wheels on it. I have dibs on them if you decide to part with M-Technic.

Is the Corvette paid off? Hmmm . . .nah, I'm selling the Miata for the same reason you're getting rid of your sports cars so I am definitely with you on the school thing bro.
I will probably wind up drifting a Corvette before I die however.

You would have had to blow that motor sky high to warrant needing the entire head replaced. Most likely all it needs is to be decked by a machine shop ($50-$100) and have a new head gasket installed. I would hate to see that thing get parted out or go to the crusher when it could take a little time get get it back up and running.

This man speaks truth . . . .worst case scenario, you need a new valve, I would just get performance parts at that point, still not 3500 bucks worth of work. That's why I was taken so far aback when you said that, my 540i had the 4.4l in it and it wasn't 3500 to put an entire engine in it. . . .
