last friday, when my family and i were driving down to charleston for the weekend, my dads transmission went
i could go into detail, but all that really matters was that i sat in a tow truck with quite possibly the worst suspension of any car on the road and that my dads transmission is shot
he drives an '81 mercedes 280e automatic
so the repair shop says it will be 2400 for a rebuilt transmission
he bought it for like 3300 last spring
so its either that, find a stick shift and put that in, or scrap it and find another car
im not sure what hes gonna do(probably rebuild it, too hard to find a stick shift)
but i was curious if you guys have any suggestions or comments about the fellow german automobile
thanks

I say find a beatup 280e on Craigslist, they're a dime a dozen (sorry to sound condescending) and you can just pull the transmission from that.
You can try to find a 190e manual, but anyone who has one and is selling it, knows what they have and are going to want arms and legs for it.
But yeah, if you want to grassroots it, just buy a parts car, and bum from that, that's what I'd do.
Sorry to hear about your loss . . .good luck, let us know what you finally decide to do!

yeah, what we really want to do is put a manual in it, but its a little harder to find in the states
and you arent being condescending saying that they are a dime a dozen, best selling benz ever!
so i think he'll look around and see if we can find a stick somewhere

hey guys believe me, if it was up to me, my mom would be in a 5 series deisel instead of her volvo station wagon and my dad would have another bmw, something like another e30(i found an '87 stick e30 around here on craigslist)
but unfortunately i dont pay the bills so my mom has the volvo and wants an suv
and my dad really likes the car(so do i, its very roomy and comfortable, terrible to drive though)
ill keep you guys posted though

How about the 300E series? Or maybe 420E.. :) Get the last year of the W124 body style ('84 - '95), those cars are tanks. I'm sure there'll be a few around your area.
A few in Atlanta:
