What am I?

This is my first bimmer and I'm just a little confused. This car is a 1999
328ic but it's an E36. I was under the impression that 99 was the first year of the E46. To add to my confusion, maintenance manuals for this car are
dated 92-99. Was there an overlap in the production transition between the
36 and the 46. Did they possibly delay the body style change with the convertibles. Any help!

Yes there was a overlap on the year. Big differance in the cars. Good way to tell a e36 from a e46 is..E36 when you open the hood the Kidney Grills stay in place, but when you open the hood on a e46 the grills go up with the Hood. There are to many things to list to explain the differance. Look at my Signature thats a e36. Hope this helps.

Thanks, I noticed that the manuals for the E46 are dated 99-05 and that kinda made me wonder which one to use. I've been told that there are a few differences between the 98 and the 99 as well. but I have yet to find them.

Use the E36 manual. There are going to be a few changes in each year of the E36. You can also post up questions. There are common problems to the E36, a lot here can help you out along the way.
