View Full Version : Club Bimmer attempts to break a Guinness World Record!!

Hello BMW owner and enthusiast,
Greetings from lovely Atlanta, GA. My name is Mitchel DeFrancis and I am the Manager of ClubBimmer.com -the internet’s only true and pure BMW website with discussion forums covering every single BMW automobile made since 1929. From the incredible BMW 328 Mille Miglia to the amazing BMW Isetta to the fire breathing BMW M5 and everything in between. This website is pure BMW, no political rants, no religious tangents, no BS. We run a tight ship and members will notice the quality of the site.
To coincide with the launching of ClubBimmer.com we are embarking on a challenge that will be a world record breaking attempt! On March 29th 2007 the Mini Owners Group in the UK broke the record for longest single marque automobile convoy on public roads. They had a 2 mile long convoy of Minis that consisted of 269 car. This number broke the world record. We plan to challenge this Guinness World Record with BMW automobiles. I’d like to get 300 plus BMWs in a single convoy and drive on a Georgia state highway for at least 10 miles in a virtually unbroken chain of cars. There are thousands of BMWs in the Southeast region of the US, this should be an easy feat. I’d like to have BMWs from around the world partake in this record breaking attempt. We can go in the history books! BMWs must prevail!
APRIL 5th 2008: We are assembling at Chateau Elan (www.chateauelan.com) at 9:00am. It will take about 1.5 hours to get everyone in groups, then first lead car out at 11:00am. Groups of 10-20 cars will depart one by one until we have confirmed approximately and at least 350 BMW automobiles have departed. With video recording as proof and evidence, we will drive in a single, almost unbroken line of 300+ BMW cars to Road Atlanta (www.roadatlanta.com). That is about 35 miles drive. If we have 300+ BMWs in the drive we will break the world record!
It is MOST vital to go to ClubBimmer.com and sign up for free membership and check out the forums. If you decide you want to be a part of this world record attempt, you must contact us through the website. You will not get spam or junk emails from us. If you sign up to be part of the world record attempt it is EXTREMELY important to be here when we ask you to. If we have too many people flake and not show up, we are doomed from the start. We ask you to keep your word that you will show up with your BMW. We must obey all traffic laws and speed limits or we can jeopardize the record attempt.
Please email me: mitch@cobrasales.com or autostrada75@hotmail.com You can also private message me on the website.
Thanks for checking out the site, and please pass the word along to other fellow BMW lovers that you know. We need to really work hard to make this work. I will need volunteers throughout the next few months, if you are interested in helping us please contact me.
Mitch
UPDATES: 3/6/08 I've gotten literally dozens of emails about other car groups breaking the 269 Mini UK record since March 2007. I've been told that a US Mini Group recently got 273 cars, that is not an official world record yet. I've also heard that a Mini Group in Thailand had over 440 Minis. I have no idea. We are officially registered with Guinness to attempt the Largest Parade of a Single Brand of Vehicle.
The current official record for "Largest parade of BMW cars" is:
A total of 107 BMW coupé cars took part in a parade organised by the BMW Coupé Club Nederland (BCCN) at The Hague, Netherlands, on 25 April 2004. So we will tackle this record first!
Good luck with the new site.

Awesome guys! I need as many BMWs as possible to attend this. OK guys, what do you guys think about a date for the record attempt? Do you think we should do it this winter, or should we advertise the heck outta the event, get a TON of people and make it in the spring? What do you think? I want to do the best for this site and to ensure we have a successful record break!!

Any idea of what the current record is, where it happened and when? I would venture that the loction was the German Autobahn.
Speaking of the Autobahn, I have had the pleasure to drive on it a couple of times but I understand it is much more speed regulated now than in the past. Anyone know or has anyone driven it recetnly?
Justin

Go and read the first post by Mitch it is like 269
Mitch
09-25-2007, 02:38 PM
Yes the record was broken in March of 2007 by the Mini Owner's Group in the UK. The record is 269 cars in a single convoy. We are going to have over 300 in a single convoy. I think we will have more than 300, maybe even 400!! I hope we can set a new bar for car convoys. I know we can do it! We just have to get the word out!
Thanks everyone for your help!

Dear Mr DeFrancis,
Thank you for your enquiry regarding your intention to attempt the
record for "Most cars in single convoy on the road". Your proposal is
very similar to an existing record that we monitor and so we suggest you
attempt this instead: "Largest parade of BMW cars".
The current record (current as at the date of this letter) is:
A total of 107 BMW Coupe cars took part in a parade organised by the
BMW Coupe Club Nederland (BCCN) at The Hague, Netherlands, on 25 April
2004.
This is great news! We will smash this record with ease!

We want to be a part of this.
I'm also going to mention it to my boss and his wife.
He has an M6 and his wife has a 6.
His son had a M5, but traded it for a Range Rover.
What in the world was he thinking???
LOL
Anyway, we are definitely interested in being a part of this.

Lots of people are asking if BMW Motorcycles will count towards the world record and they WILL NOT count. Unfortunately not because I love Beamers.

I thought of this on the way home. Just a simple roll call where those that plan to attend can list their name and their car or cars than plan to bring. I should be good for three at least. Just put under the announcement for the record attempt.
blackstig
10-16-2007, 09:24 PM
The only issue with a roll cal is that they tend to work for 3 or 4 pages, and can even work when it comes to arranging the prospective attendees, however, they tend to lose arrangement after a short while. All it takes is for one person to forget to copy and paste the list or for one person to forget to say "I'll be there" on the threads.
Most often, when you have a registration form, things tend to become a little more organized because persons tend to follow suit a little stronger. It's simple, a little PHP and some Java will make it so that all a person has to do is fill out a very short form, it'll append to a text or excel document and will make having an accurate count that much more possible.
Granted, we'll never know the exact number, because it never fails, right around the time when it's a week before the event, people will back out or fall through, so the numbers will be greater or lesser. THEN you'll have the folk that just show up because there's a bunch of BMWs and they own one too.
Mitch, you NEED . . .NEED . . .NEEEEEEED to talk to GWR and find out what the stipulations of setting the record are. I see that you found out that the bikes won't be included, but what about the SUVs? I notice that the title is BMW CARS not BMW Vehicles. Do the new Mini's count? ^_^ That's just wishful thinking right there, I know, LOL!
But yes, what will need to be done to get an accurate count? Will they have a representative there, lining us up and counting us out one by one, will there be a "sign-in sheet", is it signature based, I mean, I have some questions, and if you need me to do some more work, I'm all about it, just make sure you get to me before I take my daily dump . . . .
after that . . . .it's all down hill . . .there's no work after I poo!
HAHAHAHAHA!
-Stig
SOUTHERNBIMMER
10-16-2007, 09:33 PM
No Stig mini's won't count. They would be considered Mini Coopers not BMW's. I thought Mitch said "marque" which I would assume meant any BMW branded vehicle although I do see why motorcycles wouldn't count. Mitch? You going to set us all straight?

Yes we can have BMW SUVs, we cannot have BMW motorcycles, but I will allow them to participate, but they cannot be counted towards the record.
Now for the official business. This is the guidelines for our record attempt, this is taken directly from my official paperwork from GWR.
"Largest Parade of a Single Brand of Vehicle"
The following acts as a guide to the specific considerations and undertakings, in addition to the general requirements as detailed in the General Rules of the Record Breaker's Pack, for any potential attempt on the above record.
They shoud be read and understood by all concerned -organizers, participants and witnesses prior to the event.
Please note that, as detailed in the Agreement Regarding Record Attempts, these guidelines in no way provide any kind of safety advice of can be construed as providing any comfort that the record is free from risk.
Guidelines:
The records for the Largest Parades of a single brand of vehicle are based on the number of vehicles by a particular manufacturer in a parade.
1 - These records are for the greatest number of vehicles of the same make/marque starting and completing a parade route. All vehicles muct carry the same name badge (e.g. Ford, Rolls Royce, BMW, VW); it is not sufficient for the vehicles merely to be produced by the parent company. It is not possible for Guinness World Records to list separate records for every model of car ever produced (or even for the many vehicles that are considered 'iconic' for whatever reason). For this reason, records for specific models of car will NOT be considered (e.g. largest parade of VW Golfs).
2 - The minimun distance of the parade must be 3.2 km (2 miles) from the starting point to the finish (all cars must cross the start line and drive the length of the route to the finish line).
3 - If a car cannot complete the route, that car MUST be deducted from the total count.
4 - The column of cars must be continuous. As a general guide, the cars should not be more than two car-lengths apart during the parade.
5 - Where the parade takes place on a public road, the assistance of local law enforcement should be obtained. All traffic laws must be obeyed at all times.
6 - The registration number of each vehicle, as well as the name and telephone number of the driver, should be recorded on a pre-printed sheet and submitted with the world record claim.

Got it, the word will be passed around, basically a convoy, we need law enforcement help or we need to make sure we convoy on a clear passage of highway or sidestreets with minimal redlights because that will break us up!

Mitch...... a suggestion. You may wanna find a road that is away from the general population (ie. not RT400, 75, 85) and w/o lots of on/off ramps.
I say that because anytime we've done a mt drive up 400 (lets say), you always seem to get idiots wanting to join the line even though they can see its an organized event.......... heck, even with the police escort earlier this year for the childrens charity ride from TurnerField to FOA, still dipsticks on the road.
Soooooooo. I bet you can find some 5-10miles of highway in the northern areas that could totally be controlled. Or, pick that last stretch of rt400 early some sunday morning....

Yeah thats ture but if we stay to one side of the road than i think we will be ok there is not alot of on ramps toward the end of 85 where we will be. If the police can block off the on ramps that would be nice too.

What car should lead this Bavarian Super-convoy? A classic pre-war 328 Mille Miglia? Maybe a pair of Isetta's? Or will we go with something current like a 2008 M3 sedan, or maybe a modern icon like the E39 Dinan 5?

OK everyone, once the world record drive is complete, we are all driving down to Stone Mountain Park to participate in 4ngieFest 2008 BMW show and party! Can you believe what a wonderful BMW day this is going to be??
The Schedule:
April 5th 2008
9:30am to 10:30am -start gathering at Gwinnett Arena and get into groups for World Record Parade and drive.
11:00am- Lead car out, groups follow. We will have police assisting us onto and off of 85 North.
11:30-12:30 -the entire group of 350+ BMWs will drive on 85 North from Gwinnett Arena to Road Atlanta. Drive is about 25 miles long, and we must obey the speed limit of we risk losing the record.
1:00pm-2:00pm -Group dispersal to 4ngieFest at Stone Mountain Park.
3:00pm- AngieFest begins!
Lodging info: I suggest using www.kayak.com or you may want to stay at one of the hotels in the park.
Here's a map of Stone Mountain Park. The lot we're using is the Yellow Daisy lot, across from the police station, in the bottom right corner of the map.
"Entrance into Stone Mountain Park requires an $8.00 one day parking permit per vehicle or an annual parking pass. This permit gives you access to the Park's numerous outdoor adventures for all ages including the public picnic areas, hiking trails, children's playground, walk-up trail and the spectacular Laser Light Show NOT ALL ATTRACTIONS WILL BE OPEN ON THIS DATE.."
Please note: This is for all BMWs

Mitch,
Left a post on the Bimmerforum thread you started, but wanted to make sure you got it here as well.
Saw the press release, but more publicity could amp up the chances of breaking 270. Any thoughts as to contacting local/national media (ABC/CBS/NBC)? Could easily result in helicopter footage that would help as proof for Guiness verification. Is Guiness currently involved?
BTW, mentioned this to 4ngie: for whatever reason, looks like the Bimmerforum posts are taking place on the Georgia forum, might be worth starting a thread over on the Southeastern US one. Plenty of folks like myself in AL, TN, FL and the Carolinas that would be interested, but don't necessarily view the Georgia forums. Just a thought.
Cheers,

I emailed Neal Boortz, who drives a 6 Series he calls "The Catfish", about the event. I haven't heard from him, but maybe if everyone on the board sends him emails we might get his attention.
Go to Boortz.com and click on the link to email the show. Keep it brief and don't link to the event page. Just mention that more info can be found at ClubBimmer.com. He doesn't like links....
Also, make sure you mention the Fair Tax. If we can give him a platform to spread the word about it, he just might decide to join us. If we get Boortz as our lead Bimmer, we are golden for the record. He'd probably send us over 500 cars easy.
So, get those emails out to the show. I plan on sending him a new one about once a week until he tells me to bug off or he shows an interest!

Does anyone have a connection at Andretti's? That might be a good friday night spot. If we get them to throw some money in as a sponsor, we could set up an event for Friday night to have everyone get together. I think they have a bar(I think?) and go-karts, could it get any better?

Since this thread is now 488 posts long I'm not going to try to search, but I was wondering: how far do you all have to drive to make the record books? A mile? 200 feet?
This question is constantly on my mind. I'm starting to lose sleep over it.

10 Miles? Wow, we had 5 cars and got separated before mile 1 was completed. There's going to have to be a LOT of organization in order to make sure that we start, drive off, continue and finish at the same time.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing on Saturday. We are going to need some law enforcement assistance to get everyone out on the road together. Without closing off the road, I have no idea how we are going to keep non-Bimmers out of the line....

Guys, we cannot prevent other cars from going in and out of the parade. Its going to be a loooong line of BMWs, so that in unfortunately inevitable. It will not harm the record, but we will try not to allow this to happen.
Whats is good, is that I have contacted Gwinnett County PD and Georgia Public Safety Escorts and we WILL have police around to help us. However, Georgia State Patrol has been notified by official letter, and they have no interest in helping us.

Okay, I don't feel so dumb anymore :D , I was doing some more calculations and I think I realize where I was thinking 2-miles...350 cars with about one car spacing in between will result in about a 2-mile long train of BMWs (with vehicles up to ~16 feet long). Unfortunate the State Police isn't supportive. Mitch, what's their address? Do you think a strong mail campaign might help?
Cheers,

UPDATE!!
Ok everyone, Gwinnett Arena has officially declined permission for us to use their parking lot for 2 hours. I'm very disappointed but nothing we can do. I have been in touch with Chateau Elan and they are considering letting us on the property to start the drive to Road Atlanta.
To officially break the records, we need to drive a minimum of 2 miles as a parade. All cars that start the parade must finish, or cannot be counted. Its 6.7 miles from Chateau Elan to Road Atlanta. That will break the record.
I'll keep you posted and thanks for being here!
