Five young men (ages 18-20) died in a car accident in Ocala FL on Saturday. They were driving their BMW down a private runway (presumably at a high rate of speed) when they went over an embankment, flew 200 feet through the air, and hit a tree, cutting the car in half and scattering debris for several hundred feet.

Sad and tragic, but preventable. No word yet on alcohol or drugs, but somehow I think it wouldn't matter, it seems that kids that age, especially boys, are huge risk-takers in automobiles.

So sad for their families. :(

Note: Propellors on hood and trunk dont actually allow BMW's to fly...

Wow...thats sad...They had to be hauling A$$ to fly that far off of an 80 foot embankment and do that kind of damage to the car.

Update: It was a 2008 M5, an $82k car, that was given to one of the 18-year-olds in the car two months prior to the incident.

Yes, the kids were ultimately at fault. But what friggin' idiot gives that kind of a car to a kid that age? I still feel so very bad for the parents, but sheesh.

reminds me of a kid I knew in high school. His parents got him a viper at 17. What happened, you guessed it he wrecked it 4 months later. But here is the kicker....they got him another one!

young drivers should have a power to weight restriction on what they can operate. I got in enough trouble with my 8v golf as a first car, cant imagin what I would have done with a M5!

I don't get what you mean by this stig. Usually the word "Darwinism" is only used by people who don't understand the Theory. But I think you are just making fun of this like the Darwin awards. Which completely goes against the Theory of Evolution.

Its kind of ironic that just hours before on an M5 board someone pointed out how dangerous it is to have that much power at such a young age and the kid replied that he is very safe and would not risk the lives of others...

Its dumb to have that kind of a car at that age. I knew of a kid just like Ender mentioned back in HS. Same situation, finally after wrecking the second sports car they got him a brand new Escalade on 22's...yeah he flipped that too.

I know that once I pick up my M3 I will be taking a drivers school down at CMP in Kershaw to get to know my car a little better. But that doesnt mean I am going to act like a dumbass and risk the lives of others either.

WOW tragic yes, stupid as heck YES. What did they think it was going to miraculously start flying?? Having a fast car does not make you a good driver. They get my vote for 2008 Darwin Awards for sure.
