BMW 740i Code PO170 & PO173

Does anyone know what error code PO170 & PO173 means in a 2000 740i ? The manual that came with the code reader says fuel trim bank 1 and bank 2. What does this mean? anyhelp is greatly appreciated.

1998 750iL - same P0173 code - fuel trim. Otherwise the car seems to run fine. Root cause appears related to a small modulation valve located to the outside of the valve cover with two vacuum hosed and a wire connector. It hangs on a support hook via a rubber isolator and located towards the front. Same device for each cylinder bank. I suspect this modulates by-pass air for fuel trim. I was also able to use a scantool to monitor fuel trim outputs and indeed one was reading very high around 19% (short term) and the long term fuel trim stayed at 0%. I removed the small modualtion valve and cleaned with carb cleaner and ran some WD-40 thru it, re-intalled. All fuel trim outputs now reading similar at around 1% and so far no service engine soon light. It does look like extensive miles (maybe beyond 200) are necessary before OBD runs through all checks.

Just an update on my PO170 & PO173 issue. I cleaned the contacts with CRC electronic contac cleaner put it back together and turned the service engine light off. Drove the car for 10 -20 miles, the light came back on. A word of caution, contcat cleaner I used desolved the insulation on the purple and yellow wires but not the black ones. I wrapped the bare wires with electric tape to keep it from shorting. Any other suggestions?

Possible air mass meter problem or un-metered air (Intake leak). Car needs to be smoke tested for manifold leaks and air mass meter live data values checked.

A lot of time fuel trim codes are set due to an intake air leak. Those cars seem to have this as common problem. sometimes it is just a vacuum line or something, Usually you have to reseal the whole intake

Thank you GCR & Carma for your coments. I have looked at the vacuum hoses, they seem ok. However, I have a small radiator coolant leakage coming from under the manifold collecting on top of the engine block. Could this be related to the vacuum leaks?

If the leak is trickling down the back of the block and exiting through the transmission bellhousing, the valley plate gasket is leaking. Check the heater hoses and the auxiliary (electric) waterpump at the back of the engine bay. If they are OK, then the valley plate will need replacement. This requires removal of the intake manifold & rear water jacket & will probably take care of your fuel trim issues by resealing the intake manifold while it is off thye engine.

Thanks GCR, your are right. The leak tricles down the transmisson bellhouse. Which means I have to do what you've suggested. How difficult is it to remove the manifold?

Its becoming a common repair on the V8's. Degree of difficulty depends or your level of skill & how comfortable you are taking it all apart. There are plastic components that have to be treated very delicately to prevent expensive breakage, like injector harness plugs, plastic pipes etc. We recommend replacement of the knock sensors when doing a valley plate as they have to be removed, and are often cracked before you even touch them, as well as the external & internal breather pipes on & next to the intake manifold as well as the rear cover plate.

Is there any leak sealant products out there that one could add to the radiator fluid to reduce or stop the leak? I am comfortable with the work but I don't know if it needs any special tools that I may not have. I have the basic metric sockets and wrenches. Do I need anything else?

Don't use any type of stop-leak product. You'll do more harm than good. No special tools needed, just lots of patience......
