So I am going to be installing new rotors, breaks, and sensors on my Z this coming weekend.

I have installed breaks/rotors before, but never on a Bimmer.

Is there anything I should be aware of? Tips? Tricks?

I was thinking about taking to this euro mechanic, but he quoted that it would be a 4 hour job thus costing me $240 in labor (60/hr). This seemed kinda high, so I'm opting to do it myself.

Any help is much appriciated.

Ha ha, brakes. well they shouldn't be too hard to do. just use lots of brake cleaner and latex gloves. good luck.

LOL.

I like the good luck part at the end.

That gets me a little worried.

I just picked up the Haynes guide to ease me through it, but I'm not sure how much help it will be.

PatZ3......... Nothing different from any other type of rotor. I will say though that if you have the original rotors on there, they may need a cafefull tap from the backside to come off. (I forget if the current one have the small set-screw by the lugs also).

Question...........did you get a new sensor(s)?

The caliper is also about the same, two bolts from the rear.......... But most likely the "biggest" thing you will hit is the rotor stuck to the hub. Overall very easy to do.

I havent picked up the sensors yet, but I figured I would just run down to the local parts stor and grab them.

Does quality matter much with sensors?

Pat,
Did you ever get an answer? Personally, I always think quality matters, so I used OEM sensors. Also, for future DIY to include your brake job, I recommend the following:
http://www.bimmerdiy.com/diy/e36brakesystem/ (great DIY on E36 brakes)
http://www.bimmerdiy.com/dir/e36 (great source for DIY projects)
http://www.pelicanparts.com/bmw/techarticles/tech_main.htm (another great source for DIY projects)

Cheers,

Just did my rears on Sunday, not too bad and this was my first attempt! I have done fronts before though. As was mentioned lots o' brake cleaner, gloves, (it's a dirty job), some anti-squeak grease, I use the Lubri(?) Moly-whatever it's called.. :).

But, most importantly be safe, make sure you jack up the car properly, use jackstands on both sides and for added measure, I also kept my jack up on the diff (at least when doing the rears), supported with a block of wood. Also use wheel chocks.

I agree with Gibber66. I also think that OEM is going to be the most reliable setup. I'm partial to Hawk pads. But for most people, I suggest oem pads and oem rotors. It's not wise to skimp on these parts.

I've seen where people have spent thousands on brake upgrades and after it's all done, the car takes further to stop than oem.

I dont think the sensors are very expensive from the dealer. The only thing that you might run into is the little hex bolt that holds the rotor the hub. It's right between 2 of the lug holes.

:1eye: My OEM comment was geared toward the sensors themselves, but I'm all for performance mods. Personally, I went with dimple/slotted rotors from iRotors and PosiQuiet ceramic pads...love 'em! They're a direct replacement fit and work awesome.

Cheers,
Gibber
