I don't really follow politics very much, but I am not comfortable at all about where the 2008 election is headed. I'm a Libertarian (fiscally conservative but socially liberal atheist), but usually end up voting Republican since voting Libertarian is usually like wasting my vote. I can't bring myself to vote for one of these religious freaks on the ballot. I don't think I can bring myself to vote for a Democrat though either. What do you guys think about the election?

Ugh, I can see how this thread can get ugly. All I'll can say is what's important to me is keeping our country safe and keeping us free to do what we want with our money and our lives. To that end, I have chosen to support the biggest "religious freak" (as you call them) out of the whole bunch. I'm Wiccan, and I support the Southern Baptist preacher, go figure. I think it's a matter of weeding through all the BS surrounding each and every candidate, and finding the things that are really important to you to support. There's never going to be any candidate that "has it all".

Religion and politics on message forums never turn out well. I copied this from the original World Record Event post:
"This website is pure BMW, no political rants, no religious tangents, no BS. We run a tight ship and members will notice the quality of the site."
Let's not go here....

Ok, I just needed to vent. It's just so frustrating that there's not a single candidate out there that I agree on even half of the issues with.

I know, it's frustrating. Just pick one or two issues that are the most important to you and choose a candidate that supports those issues. Then try to disregard all the other unsavory aspects of that candidate! LOL, politics is an ugly game. We're in for a long, drawn-out election year, I'm afraid. :mf_popcorn:

I'm just glad you all are interested in the election. Its people that don't vote that bother me.

I just wish we had something to vote for. The whole time Ive been able to vote its been a "who will screw up the least" thing, instead of a "who is the right person" thing.
The entire political system in this nation needs to be scrapped and redone, there is just to much waste and curruption in the current system for it to go anywhere but further down the drain :(

It needs to go back to the way the Framers intended. Congressmen & Senators were farmers, storekeepers, doctors, etc. that just went to DC part of the year to do their part-time political "jobs", then went back to their normal jobs at home. Now, Politician is an actual profession and their sole focus is on getting votes and keeping their positions of power. Thomas Jefferson and all his buddies are probably turning over in their graves every election year.

Mitch............ that and the people that vote for someone and are "glad we have a minority in there", as I heard one person say on TV the other day. I don't really care about that.
You vote for the person that is gonna get the job done and not because of their race, religion, or sex.

Have to agree. Political views can cause a rift between members.

I was somewhat shocked that Obama won by as much as he did; while i do feel that he's the "best" democratic candidate, it still surprised me. I swing to the right but consider myself libertarian. My focus in college was political communication so I have a slew of research on different aspects of political office, elections, etc. if anyone is bored...

Dang, there sure are a lot of Libertarians on here. How come we can't mount a decent campaign?? I'll be happy to run....

Thanks. If I ever had the financial backing, I would love to run for public office. Take this country back one voice at a time.

The economy going to really be the big issue going forward. Much of the growth is tied to crude oil prices. The higher the price the slower over all our economy. With China and India (did you know the average age in India is 25) two country's willing to fork over money to get what they want for there people. Remember 2000 a few years ago crude was 30 a barrel. India and China were just starting to show up. Now there well established.
Which one has the answers? Clinton wants to spend billions on home ownership programs. Do not think that is as good as Obama who wants to have the courts change the interest rates on the loans.
As it stands right now, I am pulling for the one Chuck Norris is supporting.

Voting is over rated. P Diddy and all those guys on MTV don't know what they're talking about. An individual person has no say what so ever on the election. Of course when whoever gets elected is in house and screws up I can say "man, I'm glad I didn't vote for that moron."

Wow Julie, you really did nail it. I find it hard to vote for someone who doesn't understand that the Theory of Evolution is fact. but he does go for the fair tax plan which is a good thing. All I know is that Bush appointed judge Jones who ruled in the Dover case that Intelligent Design (ID) isn't even close to science and is religiously based. So even an evangelical president makes good choices sometimes. also note, when Bush was questioned about ID he said he favored it being taught in schools.

That's exactly my point, too! The FairTax and a couple other of his issues are what makes me like him, but some of his other viewpoints are really hard hard to swallow. When you vote for any politician, it always feels like making a deal with the Devil (ironic, isn't it?).

The Blood Bath has yet to start. Going to be a nasty before it is all done. The Clinton war Machine is a thing of legend. All the others are going to have to step up or step out.

I disagree, mostly because the majority of non-voters would vote differently than me though.

I am pretty well-informed for a 23 year-old guy and I've researched most of the major candidates. I can say with a fair amount of certainty that every candidate I've seen at this point can suck my Iowa caucus.
