Actually I wonder if the center mounted instrument cluster would be annoying after time, or maybe it grows on you?

Well my car, the E39 M5 has the same engine as the later Z8s. The engine in that small car must be ridiculous! Sooo much power! I'd love to drive another Z8!

Mitch, the Z8 only had 1 engine, ever, period. I posted this info in the Z8 forum, it was of course the M5's wonderful 5.0liter 400hp V8. The only engine ever used in the "Z8" wasn't called the Z8, but rather, the Alpina Roadster, an '03 only model consisting of just 555 units. It used a 4.8liter 375hp V8 mated to an auto transmission and was available in only silver or black.

Why do you say that early Z8s used the same engine as 540s? Not true, sorry. Maybe you're thinking of the 840s from the 90s? Idk.

This came into Global earlier today. On my patented "Philip's 1 to 10 Scale of Automotive Sexiness"™, with a 1991 Dodge Caravan being a "1", and a Ferrari 575 GTC being "14", I'd say the Z8 is a solid very respectable "8".

I have owned an 01 since new and it has been a trouble free car.I doubt i will ever sell it as imo it is one of the nicest cars BMW has built and the lines are timeless.

I saw a Alpina Z8 at the BMWCCA concours over the summer, and the engine in that car looked exactly like the 540/740/840 engine covers. It did not look like the M5 V8 engine. In fact I think I have a picture of the Alpina Z8 engine bay, and the engine was identical to the 540 engines.

As mentioned by Elusiv, it was the 4.8L engine that I believe was used in some X5 vehicles the X5 4.8is I believe, with some Alpina work. They had that similar engine cover that the E39 V8's had.

Of course I could be wrong.. :1eye: :icon18:

You are spot-on, to the best of my knowledge.

check out the old BMW 507 and compare the way it looks to the z8, very similar.

The BMW Z8 is one of my favorite. The BMW Z8 was a car produced by German automaker BMW from 2000 to 2003. It was given the E52 BMW model code. the BMW Z8 sports car was the company's conception of what its famous 507 roadster would have been if built past the 1950s. Stylistically, it offered many of the same cues, such as a long, sloping hood with round headlight blisters, twin-kidney grille, distinctive vents aft of the front wheels and a striking leather interior with a simplistic layout. The BMW Z8 was always intended to be a "halo" car, designed to draw attention to BMW and lead to increased sales of other BMW vehicles.
