Yep ^_^, Better gas mileage and better handling than both of your Bavarian beauties . . . just less seating, less leather, less coolness and less status :(

LOL

Speaking of gas mileage, my OBC tells me I'm getting 22 MPG on the 740. Not bad for an 8-cylinder luxury vehicle....

Stig: Nice server. Sounds like you got a great deal on it. What are you going to do with it?

(And no, I'm not going to say something like "Did you have to borrow someone else's car to take it home?" or anything like that, because Tim already made the obligatory disparaging remark about your Miata. I don't want you to get a complex or anything, Miatas are actually really cute, we just like poking fun at you. I'm sure you understand. :))

Oh it's good times, I couldn't put that thing in the trunk though, ROFLMAO! I had to put the top down and put it in the passenger seat, HAHAHAHA! That was a very . . .very . . .cold drive home . . . .

It's going to serve it's life as a file and game server for my in-home network. It's going to make playing computer games VERY fun ^_^. I just need to master the art of the network-install when going across different types of architecture and that should make it so that i do not have to install the game on each PC, just the central server...

Good luck with that. I had to do something similar with our AutoCad program at work and it is a bitch to maintain. Luckily for us, the actual program is installed on each machine, but the license manager and templates are all on a central server. Took me forever to figure it out, even with the network installation instructions that came with the program....

Oh that's cool. Can you use it as a printer server too?

I sure can ^_^, I really want to section off the garage and make a little room for it using cubicle walls. Keep it out of the way, just hook up an Ethernet in and Ethernet out for it . . .OR . . .go with an Ethernet out and dual Ethernets in to ensure failsafe redundancy. I'll have to see how it plays out, I'll get a monitor for it, or for my main PC and use THIS monitor on that one, then just hook up a keyboard and mouse and call it a day. It's running Windows XP Professional, but I might honker down and purchase a copy of either Windows Server 2003 or Windows Server 2007 . . . .it all depends on what money looks like in the coming months.

Crazy...

Nice server though. If you could get me the "hook up" like that that would be kick ass. It doesn't have to be that extravagant though. That is a total steal though.

Looks like my office... just a bit cleaner and without the Dell and ISeries. I have no "real" servers at this point.

looks good and is a steal. I like SAS technology over SCSI though. are the cpu's dual core or just regular? raid 1 I take it, or raid0?

I understand about 3 words in that sentence and about 10 words in this entire thread...

yeah, I'm a server technician for the big computer company that I don't represent online. but I do get to play with pretty cool computer/servers. The big intel computer I support, can have up to 32 physical processors in it. rarely do they ever run Windows on them, usually vmware or linux.

but his system is crazy for the price.

blackstig

VMWARE FTW!!!

Welcome fellow tech/admin!

LOL!

Nah, seriously . . . it's running a simple JBOD right now, I'm waiting until I get more drives before I go with a RAID setup, I'm thinking of running RAID 10 or 50 . . .just to be different . . .speed + redundancy = :D

The processors are single core, but with XEON technology, it doesn't matter on a small scale or even on a moderate scale enterprise level. I really want to get something along the lines of a Cisco 2948 and run a 7401 or 2600 for an uplink from a T1. That would be SWEET, but I don't like the price of T1, but the bandwidth . . .I can fall in love with ^_^

SAS is sweet technology, although I see a lot of companies that I've been contracted to switching out from SCSI all together and going with SATA or eSATA. SAS is probably a lot more industrially used however, I'm not sure, but I've worked on small, moderate and extremely large (D.O.D) enterprise and it's surprising how many are switching over to SATA.... I guess it's good for me slightly, obsoleting SCSI will make the prices of the HDDs drop ...

ooh cisco routers!!! :D it's always good to beef up on the IOS and mucking around with it. Yes, I would love a T1 at home. talk about being able to host a ton of client/server games and apps. and you right, $50 for this setup is crazy. the cpu's alone cost 10x that.

my faithful linux server died a while back, I've been tinkering with the idea of building a stout core2duo setup for it. I love these chips. so fast for the money.
