Alan,
I tried to send you a PM, but it says your box is full. You've just become too popular!!
It seems like everytime I get this thing running like I think it should, something else happens....
I got back to I-20 west this afternoon and was driving along about 65 MPH when the ABS and DSC warning lights came on at the same time. Nothing happened with the car, just the indicator lights came on. Then, about ten seconds later the speed-o-meter needle just fell to zero and stayed there even though I was still under full power. No other problems until I got to my neighborhood and noticed the power steering was a little more difficult once again. Not completely out, but definitely noticeable. Any thoughts? I'm sure you'll need to hook it up to read the fault codes.

Sad to say Tim but all I've ever read about 7's is that they are the most trouble plagued of all BMW's.

Yeah, I guess maybe I should consider that E39 M5 after all....

Tim,
sorry about that. I'll clean out my pm box in a minute. I think you may have a rear wheel speed sensor (hopefully) going out, or (hopefully not) a ABS/DSC module problem. Any chance we can plug in to the car soon & check fault code history? I could get the laptop at the shop & meet you somewhere. I know its a long haul for you from Douglasville. The problem with the module is it will almost always record a wheel speed sensor code (Normally R/Front) when in fact, the module is the problem. Catching the problem with live data is the sure way to see whats going on. Let me know what works for you.
Off to clean out my pm box ..............
Alan.

Fortunately, I have no more travel planned this month, so I am in town for the next few weeks. I may try to meet you one day this next week and you can also listen for the "klunk" I'm getting from under the car. It is even happening now right after I shut the car off. It did it twice within ten seconds of turning off the ignition when I got home.
Just curious, would the wheel speed sensor cause the speed needle to flat-line? It was a bitch trying to figure out how fast I was driving the rest of the way home....

I expect the noise will be exhaust related if you heard
something after shutting the car down. Shouldn't be hard to find.
The speedo gets its info from the L/Rear wheel speed sensor through the ABS/DSC module. It would be nice to have the laptop plugged in while the failure is evident to look at live data.

Thanks Alan. That makes sense. I'll give you a call this week and see if we can meet somewhere with your laptop.

Go figure. Took the car out tonight to fill up with gas for the week. The warning lights were still on as I backed out of the driveway, but as soon as I put it in drive the lights went out and the speedo starting working. Drove to town, ate dinner, went to the gas station and back home without the lights coming back on. Guess the trolls went on Xmas break....
Dammit! There goes our live data check:(
