Hmmm, I guess I would have to see it. What color are the grilles? The wheels?
Anyone else out there have a picture of blacked out chrome on a silver car?

Wristshot96 and Catmint will either of you be in the Roswell area and could stop by in the near future so I can see what the issue is and then what product would be best to shine these areas back up?
I do not know if there is a clearcoat applied to these chrome areas or if they are just raw metal…like some rims on the market.
Whatever you do, do not apply Simple Green as a cleaner because it will permanently etch into any non clear-coated finish. One of my customers did use Simple Green as directed from their site on her Fiske rims. I was able to shine these rims back up nicely but they are permanently micro marred/etched.

I'm not sure when I'll be in Roswell again, but if I am before blacking out the chrome I will stop by your shop. Where do you work?

Beleive it or not, those trim pieces are surprisingly inexpensive from the dealership and very simply to install. If yours are that bad I'd just recommend putting some nice shiny new alluminum on there.

I live and work in Roswell. If this trim piece is aluminum my first go to product is Meguiar's Hot Rims Mag & Aluminum polish which costs about $8 for a can at any auto store. Do you have a "good eats" place to meet for lunch where we could try the products out. I would willing do a quick DIY write up as this could help others that like to work on their cars and particularly if this model has a “bright work” issue history.

I have heard that 00 or 000 fine steel wool and some metal polish will make chrome bits look new. I've not tried this yet.

I will be attending the meet this Saturday so here is my cell phone number so we can find each other 770.655.2054. I probably will not be attending the entire meet as I have lots of leaves to harvest from the yard [unless I am having too much fun meeting everyone then the leaves can wait another day] so give me a call during the week and we can set a time frame so I don’t miss you. I will be wearing a dark brown cowboy type hat if this helps you out.

PaintPolisher: Maybe I'll see what you've got at the meet for my chrome. I've got all the supplies to black out my chrome but I'm chicken to start it so I may try to polish it so it looks good while I try to get up the nerve to paint. :)

Sure let’s see what will work first before painting.
With luck on our side we can clean up a test area and then polish this area up to see if we/you should proceed.
Unless we have clear coat failure [if you have clear coat on these parts?] you should have a project for Sunday. :D:D
I stopped doing touch up and small paint repairs a while back. Just too much hassle for the client and then there is the cost, prep takes forever and is the most important part of the process. You also have overspray issues unless you remove the bright work.
I look forward to meeting you and your car!

Yeah, overspray haunts me in my nightmares! (White car + Black trim paint).
I still want black trim instead of chrome, but maybe if the chrome can be improved I'll be happy for awhile. Thanks! See ya Saturday!

I you are going to attend would you mind bringing the 3M product along? I have not had the opportunity to use this product yet and would like to try some on the spot testing. Did your applicator turn black or stay sort of clean when you were working it in?
