Ok well i went and looked at that bmw and took it for a ride but the motor has a little bit of hesitation and a ticking sound? Im not sure what it is but i think it could be the timing belt?

Moving forward, lets go ahead and use the same posts for things like this. Right now we don't have a lot of posts going on, but who know what the future may bring. :icon18:
All gravy though . . .
ticking . . .towards the top . . .usually a lifter or a stuck valve. Towards the bottom, usually bottom end knock . . .not 100 percent positive on the architecture of the M20 motor, but they are solid.
Hesitation can be a lot, you'll have to explain it more in detail. There are a lot of things that may cause it. The AFM could be dirty or may need replacing, it could be a fuel issue, something as simple as fuel system treatment or replacing the fuel filter may correct it. As with ALL old cars, when you buy them, the first thing that should be done is a full tune up, that would include plugs, wires, filters and fluids. That's ALL of each. Full drain, flush and change.

Yeah a ticking sound could be a bunch of things, chain tensioner, stuck lifters, vacuum leak or exhaust mani leak? Ask one of our sponsors....

A hesitation could be spark related or a clogged fuel filter, or crap in the fuel tank, could be a dozen things. Ask Alan, he might know....

It could also a little unicorn, jumping around inside your car poking holes in your exhaust and ****ting in filters.

The M20 engine does not use lifters. Conventional rocker arms with eccentrics to adjust valve clearance. Valve clearance needs to be checked every 15k miles on these engines. There may be wear in the rocker arm bushings or rocker shafts, or if the valves have been run loose for a long time, the eccentrics will "mushroom" the tops of the valve stems. A lot depends on the maintenance history of the car. These engines are very tough, but they do require regular oil changes and regular valve adjustments to live a long time. Best to have someone familiar with M20's pull the valve cover & inspect the valvetrain & check clearances. Some ticking noise from the injectors is normal. The hesitation may just be tune-up related, particularly if the car has been neglected to the point of having a worn valvetrain.

My 87 325IS always ticked a little, even though it was properly maintained.
