--Between a 40 and 60 gigabyte internal HD
--Blu-Ray compatible
--Backward compatible (that means it plays PS2 and PS1 games)
--Currently has the largest selection of playable video games due to backward compatibility
--Only the 60GB model sells with the HDMI connectors
--All can connect to HDMI
--Wireless controls with motion detection (move the controller, it helps you move what you're controlling)
--Sleek design
--Currently has the largest selection of available accessories and is the ONLY console compatible with the Logitech G25 (a leather wrapped, Momo wheel with gated-six-speed shifter, clutch pedal, and 900 degrees of rotation). This wheel is also Black Stig's recommendation for any real racer who would like to practice both on and off of the track legally.
--Isn't available with rumble feature for the standard controllers. While this sounds superficial, it does add to the effect of playing a game, especially ones with cars.
--Is going to have Gran Turismo 5 ^_^

Well the 40g and 60g refer to the actual physical Hard Drive size. You can . . . .how can I put this legally . . . ."modify" your PS3 to get the 60 gigabyte hard drive, a chip usually refers to when people want to play "back up" or imported games. :icon18: mmmmm menthol!
LOL!

Is it easy to upgrade or do you have to send it in?

Go ahead and get the 60 if you are going to do it. The cost of upgrading would likely be more than just paying the extra up front.
I just sold mine on eBay and went back to the PS2. The games for the PS3 aren't that much better as far as I'm concerned and the blu-ray thing wasn't a big deal for me either. Honestly, I wasn't that impressed with the PS3 after all the hype. Of course, I'm not a hard-core junkie like Stig....

LOL! Hardly hardcore, hahahahaha! I still have my PS2 and I refuse to purchase a PS3 for the fact that I can turbocharge my Corolla for the same price of a PS3 plus a game! I won't even get into the accessories. I hardly even play video games anymore, don't really have the time :(
My dad, now HE's the one that's into it. He's purchased an XBOX 360, Nintendo Wii and is preparing to purchase a PS3. I just shrug and assume that it's truly what he wants to do with his money. He keeps talking about wanting a project muscle car and an E38, black with the premium sound system, navigation and DVD, but he keeps buying these game systems *shrugs*.
HAHA!
You're right though, the price of an upgrade probably isn't justifiable when you could probably just buy the 60gb to start with, I will, however, look into it and see what interface the harddrive is, because if it's just IDE or PATA then there is probably a really quick way to make the PS3 have the size you want inside of it. The original XBOX was very easy to hack, just format the harddrive in the ex3 file system and viola, anysize you want, in your XBOX, hopefully the PS3 is just as easy.
I tell you what . . .I think I have a way to get my dad to give up the video games. Tim! Let my dad drive your E38, LOL! He'll be so crazily in love that he'll simply SELL his Wii and 360 and he'll probably have a 7er in time for the December meeting, LOL!
Try to explain that to a college kid. They want they want.
I can understand that . . . .see if Ebay or Craigslist has one floating around for a really good price. We're getting around that timeframe where first-generation PS3s will start selling from individual owners very cheap!

I admit it, I'm a video game addict.... I love NCAA Football and Tiger Woods golf. I've had a PS2 before, sold it and got an XBOX 360. Didn't like that format and traded it for a PS3. Decided I didn't need it for the games I like and went back to PS2.
Totally understand about the kid thing. I've got a 14 year old HS freshman. He would have one of every system if I let him. But, I've got him turned on to MINIs for the moment, so hopefully he will figure out that money=modifications once he turns 18 and I get him a Cooper.

IDE PATA?
I know this isn't answering your question which I do not know the answer, but IDE = PATA. I'd think it's either PATA or SATA. Now a big question is, is it 3.5 or 2.5 laptop harddrive. I'd imagine that updating these would be pretty easy.
Heck, I'll just look it up....
2.5 SATA drive :D and it does look easy
