I have a awesome looking 1996 740il that im having a hell of a time with the check engine light. Last year I replaced a new engine and this year a new power steering pump. Soon after I got it back. my check engine light came on. I dont want to spend tons of money again looking for the problem. Can someone give me some clues or stuff to check out. Id really appreciate it.:confused::wrench::confused::confused ::confused:

First thing you need to do is read the fault codes to see what the car is trying to tell you. You could have anything from a gas cap not sealing, to a vacuum leak, to a defective sensor or catalytic converter. Fault codes stored in the control unit will point you in the right direction.
Are you in the Atlanta area?

Take your car to autozone and have them pull the codes.. Then post with the results.

I agree that you need to pull the codes. I've had my SES light go off on my 540i6 when I left the gas cap too loose. It can drive you nuts! If I were you I'd take the car to Alan if you are nearby, he knows the cars well and can help LOTS better than a local car parts store.

The bad news is that on the e38's, the CEL often means the cats have gone south. That is the most common cause of the idiot light. I agree, a local indy can diagnose the codes for you.

Take it to Alan if you are local. I just took mine there today and they did a great job of looking it over for me.

Come one by and I would be happy to check your codes. Those cars do have cat issue, but most the time you can hear them rattling, the air intake manifold gasket leak, the rear intake plates leak a lot.
Could be anything
